Pharmacology Clonidine is an imidazoline, a class of drugs that function as centrally-acting presynaptic alpha 2 agonists . Essentially clonidine acts like pushing down on the break pedal of sympathetic output thus decreasing sympathetically mediated vasoconstriction, cardiac inotropy, and chronotropy.
